Locals impress at national competition
Swimming
A group of local swimmers from the RAYS recently travelled to the national ZONE competitions in Maryland as part of the New England team.
Former Londonderry High standout Erin Hersey made the final for the 100 butterfly and finished sixth overall with a time of 1:08.12. She was also 10th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:37.54, and 22nd in the 50 freestyle with a time of 29.68. Hersey also competed in the 50 freestyle.
Nick Bergstrom swam in the 11- to 12-year-old 50 freestyle and finished with a time of 29.23, good for 21st. He also finished 25th in the 50 backstroke with a time of 35.06. Both times were personal bests.
Zack Bowen finished 18th in the 15- to 18-year-old 50 freestyle with a time of 26.28.
Youth football
The Derry Demons kicked off their season with three wins across the organizations. Mitey Mite Team 1 trounced Plymouth 33-0, Junior Pee Wee 2 beat Junior Pee Wee 1 33-7 in an inter-town matchup, and Pee Wee whitewashed Nashua PAL 26-0. Salem beat Mitey Mite Team 2 31-0 and Nashua PAL beat Junior Midgets 31-8.
Running
Hudson's Alex Brown won the Mack's Run for the Apples 5K in Londonderry on Sunday, posting a time of 16:32. Londonderry's Tyler Jean took second in the event, finishing in 17:14. In all, nine local residents placed among the top 20 finishers.
