Sports in brief

The SportsZone will host basketball leagues for boys and girls divisions in grades three/four, five/six, seven/eight, and high school varsity and JV starting the second week of September and ending right before the season begins. Teams and individuals accepted. There is also a men's fall basketball league starting Monday, Sept. 22. There will be four divisions, with each division holding about 20-plus teams. The NE Firebirds AAU baseball program under the direction of Dave Bettencourt is holding tryouts for its different age group teams starting at age 10 up to and including age 17. Haverhill Senior Baseball is accepting registrations for its fall baseball program. HSB will be entering teams in the fall league run by Play Ball of Salem, N.H. The season runs for six weeks commencing Sept. 6-7. There will be a division for players who have just graduated from Little League and will be playing on the regulation diamond for the first time. The Northeastern Lady Panthers AAU basketball club will be hosting tryouts for the 2008 fall ball season on Aug. 16 and 23 and Sept. 6. All tryouts are held at the Rockingham Athletic Club located at 175 Plaistow Road in Plaistow. There is a $30 tryout fee for all teams. Teams will be formed in all age groups beginning with 10U to 17U. DB's Instructional Baseball and Softball Facility located in North Andover, Mass., is now accepting participants for its 2008 fall baseball league. Teams or individuals are eligible to sign up. The New England Firebirds AAU baseball and ASA softball will be holding tryouts for interested players in August for the 2009 season. Firebirds AAU baseball features a team at each age group from 10 to 16 years old, with a quality coach at each level. Baseball tryouts begin on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. at Endicott College. A second tryout will be held the same day at DB's Baseball/Softball Facility in North Andover at 1 p.m. Firebirds ASA softball features teams at the 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U age levels. The 14U Northeast Hurricanes softball team will be holding open tryouts for the 2008-2009 session on Sunday, Aug. 17; Monday, Aug. 18; and Wednesday, Aug. 20 at Lancaster School in Salem, N.H. The 14U Hurricanes are coming off a successful 12U season where the team was the 2008 ASA state champions and have qualified for both the PONY and ASA National Championships. The Derry Soccer Club is looking for players interested in joining the Derry Eagles Girls U13 team. Players born between Aug. 1, 1995 and July 31, 1996 are eligible. The Derry Soccer Club provides professional training in the fall and spring through the British Challenger Organization. Greater Nutfield Community Tennis will host summer tennis camp and Quick Start Tennis programs with sessions starting Aug. 5 and Aug. 11, with a make-up session Aug. 18 at the Alexander-Carr Tennis Courts on Birch Street in Derry. Pinkerton tennis coach John Pelkey is the head professional, and the program has a one-to-five instructor to student ratio. Players ages 5 to 18 are eligible.
