Alexander-Carr is open for winter fun

DERRY — Alexander-Carr Park and Lodge are now open for winter activities weather.

Snow permitting. Alexander-Carr Park is home to a wide variety of wintry activities. The park offers sledding on multiple slopes, a heated lodge with concession stand to warm up from the cold, plenty of parking, and a variety of activities and events that are sure to get the whole family involved.

Alexander-Carr Park is also the central location of Derry’s Frost Festival held each year in February. This year, the Frost Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 15 and 16. Generally, the park is open Fridays, 3 to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It’s open additional days and times during holiday and school vacations. These times and dates are subject to change without notice, so contact the Derry Parks and Recreation Department at 432-6136 for an updated schedule of events.

Women, register soon for workshop

CONCORD — Registration opens Jan. 6 for the 2014 Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Winter Workshop, a one-day program where women can learn outdoor skills to enjoy during the winter months.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 (snow date Sunday, Feb. 16), at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s Owl Brook Hunter Education Center in Holderness.

A fee of $55 covers the workshop, lunch and most equipment use. Participants must be at least 18 years old. A brochure describing the workshop is currently available at nhbow.com.

If you are interested in attending Winter BOW, check the website http://www.nhbow.com a few days before registration opens on Jan. 6, and print out the registration form and mail it in right away. This program fills up quickly.

Winter BOW participants choose a single activity to explore during the daylong workshop. Learn how to ice fish, explore winter outdoor survival skills, track wildlife on snowshoes, try snowmobiling (beginners only) or experience the popular Shoe and Shoot class (woodland target shooting on snowshoes).
