DERRY — It was a beautiful day for golf July 11 when the Hoodkroft Ladies League hosted a Rally for the Cure golf tournament on July 13.
Rally for the Cure is a grassroots program that works to spread awareness about breast cancer and breast health in support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure through volunteer-organized golf, tennis and social events.
This marks the second year the ladies league has rallied against breast cancer.
The Hoodkroft Ladies hosted 46 participants for a scramble format tournament. The day's activities included two opportunities to win $1,000 on holes 3 and 8. Golfers needed to drive the ball at least 140 yards and be within 6 inches of the pin in order to win. There were no winners there.
There was also an opportunity to win a Cleveland Mashie Hybrid golf club on hole 9 — closest to the pin on the first shot over the brook would win. Ashley Berberian won the golf club with a 6-foot-1-inch putt remaining.
Additional funds were raised by sponsoring a marshmallow putting contest, which created a fun atmosphere for those participating. Prizes were awarded to the first-place team (Marsha Mackie, MaryAnn Lemoine, Lynn Kish and Linda Dutile) and second-place team (Shirley Webber, Alice Mullen, Carol Gitlitz and Madeline Clark).
Each participant received a goody bag with important breast health information, other Rally items, a magazine subscription and goodies from the Water's Edge Spa and Salon.
"We were very pleased with the turnout for the event and the local businesses who helped sponsor holes and contribute gift certificates," said Linda Dutile, Ambassador for the Rally. "The event brought together the members of the ladies' league and the club members for an important cause. There was a sense of excitement throughout the day's events and it was wonderful to look out and see all the pink on the course."
