LONDONDERRY — Over the years, the Pinkerton girls basketball team has been known for its defense, but it was Londonderry that turned the screws Friday night.
The Lancers, who beat Pinkerton twice last year, had 11 steals and prevented good looks at the basket, prevailing with a solid, 50-36, victory and raising their record to 8-1. It was the second loss of the season for the Astros.
"I thought our half-court defense bothered them and Jaime King did a nice job guarding (Samantha) Breslin, who is one of their better players," Londonderry coach John Fagula said. "We did a good job of controlling the tempo."
Londonderry held a 14-12 lead after the first quarter, extended its advantage to 31-21 at halftime and then limited the Astros to 15 points in the second half.
Standout sophomore Aliza Simpson had a tough shooting night for Londonderry, scoring only seven points, but she had 10 assists and five steals, while lone senior Lindsey Bolduc led the scoring with 15 points. Junior Katherine Dzenis had a pair of 3-pointers and chipped in with 12 points and King added 10.
"It's nice to have production from different kids," Fagula said. "It was a good game for us."
Breslin was the only player to reach double figures for Pinkerton, netting 10 points.
In boys action the same night, Pinkerton topped Londonderry, 48-45.
