GDTC opens its 34th annual fun run season

DERRY — The sun finally came out for over 273 children to race in the first week of the Greater Derry Track Club's 34th annual Kids Summer Fun Run held at Pinkerton Academy Track in Derry.

Donations of nonperishable food products are requested each of the 7 week series to help restock the local food banks. This week 258 pounds of food were taken to St. Thomas's Food Pantry in Derry.

The children are lead in stretching exercises and given running tips by the Greater Derry Track Club members. The 2-3 year olds run 50 meters, 4-6 year olds run 200 meters, 7-8 year olds run 300 meters, 9-10 year olds run the 600 meters, and the 11-13 year olds run the cross country mile.

14- years-old and up run the open mile on the track, bringing out local high school elite runners.

Children receive participation ribbons each week supplied by the Derry Recreation Department.

Water and Gatorade and watermelon are supplied each week. Runners who complete the series will receive medals and T-shirts from GDTC. For more information and pictures go to GDTC.org
