Special Olympians do well at National Summer Games
The Special Olympics New Hampshire delegation to the 2010 National Summer Games returned home after a very successful week of competition. Thirty-four medals were presented to the team in six sports. There were 12 each of gold and silver, and 10 bronze awarded to New Hampshire athletes in aquatics, track and field, soccer, bocce, bowling and golf.
The National Special Olympics Summer Games were held at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. More than 3,000 athletes from all of the United States competed in the event that started on July 18 and wrapped up on July 24.
In aquatics, Clint Barry took medals in the 25-yard and 50-yard backstroke, as well as the 50-yard freestyle.
Julia Carmody had success in the 25-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle. Both Barry and Carmody swim for the Derry Recreation Timberwolves.
Woman aces seventh hole on Londonderry course
LONDONDERRY — Jeanine Press of Methuen had a hole in one July 13 at the Londonderry Country Club.
Press got her hole in one on the seventh hole while playing in the Ladies League. She used a five iron to score her first-ever ace on the 110-yard hole.
The feat was witnessed by Linda McCarthy, Kelly Berry and Dawn Kokernak.
Derry resident makes third hole in one at Brookstone
DERRY — Jim Ellingwood of Derry recorded his third career hole in one and second on hole 5 at Brookstone Golf Course on July 17.
Ellingwood, a member at Brookstone, used a 5 hybrid to ace the 137-yard hole. Fred Sheldon of Hampstead witnessed the shot.
Winners announced in Londonderry tourney
LONDONDERRY — Dusty Dustin and Fran Deane were the winning team at the Londonderry Country Club's annual Member-Member tournament with a net score of 16 under par 46.
Second net was taken by the team of Roy Jenkerson and Bill Gagnon with a score of 52. In third place was the team of Bill Reeves and John Brodeur with a score of 58. The closest-to-the-pin contest was won by Roy Jenkerson on hole 11.
Londonderry Country Club is an 18-hole par 62 golf course open to the public.
Start training now for half-marathon in fall
MANCHESTER — Runner's Alley, 36 Hanover St. in Manchester, will be holding its annual 1/2 Marathon Training Group to train for the Manchester 1/2 Marathon Nov. 7.
The training program is 13 weeks and kicks off Tuesday, Aug. 10. Training runs will happen every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m., as well as Saturdays at 8 a.m. All runs will start from the store.
The 1/2 marathon training group is $159.95 and includes race entry, a technical T-shirt, 39 coached runs, nutrition and training tips, and expert guest speakers.
