Seeking women who want to play hoops

LONDONDERRY — The Londonderry Recreation Department sponsors a weekly open gym for women interested in playing basketball on Wednesdays from 7 to 10 p.m. at the North School Elementary gym in Londonderry.

In the past, it has been pickup games based on the number of women who show up. This year, the aim is to draw more consistent interest by making it a little more formal. The hope is that there will be enough interest to form teams.

Any woman, of any age or skill level, looking to get some exercise should explore. No one should feel intimidated. There are women who have never played basketball before who have been able to enjoy this activity in previous years.

Anyone interested is urged to contact Michele Fregeau at 540-0881 or Amy Simpson at 965-6204.

Fitness camp is for women only

Sox Hall of Famer to speak at church

CHESTER — Bernie Carbo, a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame, will speak at Fellowship Bible Church of Chester, 48 Rod Gun Club Road, on Thursday Sept. 30 at 6 p.m.

Carbo was The Sporting News Rookie of the Year in 1970 and later helped clinch Game 6 of the 1975 World Series by smashing a 3-run homer to tie the game.

Carbo's efforts set up Carlton Fisk's famous arm-waving, 12th-inning home run. But his addiction to drugs and alcohol eventually led to the downfall of his career and his life.

In 1990, he turned to Jesus Christ and his life changed dramatically. In 1993, he began the Diamond Club Ministry, which hosts evangelistic camps and clinics for youth and speaking engagements to churches, men's groups, prisons and schools.

His presentation at the church is free of charge and open to all.
