Learn to eat healthier
Happy New Year!
This is the time of year when we make all those sincere resolutions and maybe some of them become reality but most of them are forgotten or left undone by the end of winter. Of course, the #1 resolution is to lose weight but let's change that to "let's be healthy eaters".
Children need to learn how to eat healthy, too, and the adults in their lives can set a good example by encouraging children to try out healthy recipes on their own. The library has many new cook books for children that have quick and easy healthy recipes. Three books by Kristi Johnson are "Peanut Butter and Jelly Sushi and Other Party Recipes", "Monkey Pudding and other Dessert Recipes" and "Grilled Pizza Sandwich and Other Vegetarian Recipes".
For additional healthy recipes, we have "Make and Eat Sandwiches and Snacks" and "Make and Eat Vegetarian Food" both written by Susannah Blake. Judi Rogers has written the book, "Fun with Kids in the Kitchen Cookbook: Healthy, Kid-Tested Recipes".
All these books contain very easy recipes with colorful step-by-step directions to make fast and easy snack foods, party foods, after-school snacks and desserts. Children learn many skills when they cook such as math, reading, following directions and creativity.
Since the winter months keep us at home a lot, it is a perfect time to cook with our children. What a nice way to spend a snowy day inside and then enjoy the delicious foods! If you are suffering from cabin fever, come to the library with your children and enjoy the many wonderful books and programs that we offer for pre-schoolers to high-schoolers.
We would love to meet you! Check our Web site (www.derrypl.org) for more information or call the library at 432-6140. There is always something happening for everyone at the Derry Public Library!
