Libraries have lots to offer teens

How did the summer go by so quickly? Our Summer Reading Program here at the library was a great success. Thank you to everyone who participated,

The teens who participated read more than 100 books. Most of them were fiction, and there was a lot of variety.

Some of the most popular books of the summer have been reader favorites for a while: the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyers, and Suzanne Collins's "The Hunger Games" and "Catching Fire."

Fortunately for fans of these books, the library has new books by all of these authors. Twilight fans will want to check out "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner," a companion book to "Twilight" that tells the story of Bree Tanner, a newborn vampire who was featured in "Eclipse."

"Twilight: The Graphic Novel" is a new book that tells Bella and Edward's story in comics. Rick Riordan also has a new book out, "The Red Pyramid," which is the first in his new series, the Kane Chronicles. While Percy Jackson focused on Greek mythology, the Kane Chronicles will focus on Egyptian gods and goddesses.

The many fans of "The Hunger Games" already know that "Mockingjay," the final book in this exciting trilogy, was released on Aug. 24. Reserve your copy from the library now.

Other interesting books read by teens this summer include the fantasy "Dragonfly" by Julia Golding, the thriller "Bonechiller" by Graham McNamee, and the science-fiction book "The Adoration of Jenna Fox" by Mary E. Pearson. Books including humor were also enjoyed, including "Deliver Us" From Normal by Kate Klise, and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" by Seth Grahame-Smith.

There are still a couple of weeks for teens to read completely at their leisure, without any classes or homework. But, it's still important to make time for pleasure-reading once school starts.

All the books mentioned above are available at the library. We also have lots of brand new teen fiction, which is available in our new book section. As always, we're happy to help you find what you're looking for.

This fall, we're going to continue our regular library programs for teens. Our Anime Club, for teens who like Japanese animation, is always fun. Teens who like to write are welcome to join our creative writing group. If they're interested in volunteering for the library, our Teen Advisory Group would be perfect. This group meets monthly to help the library with planning and projects.

This summer, we had a very successful theater workshop at the library. The participants put on a great performance of the play "A Peanuts Story." We'd love to have a regular drama group at the library this fall. Give us a call if you're in middle or high school and would be interested in joining. You can contact us at 432-6140 and ask for Joan. Feel free to call with any other questions, or visit us online at derrypl.org.
