Summer is almost here!

The school year is almost over (a little later than usual because of all of our wonderful winter storms), graduations are in full swing and families are deciding what to do with the summer ahead. Look no further than your local library. This summer the entire state of New Hampshire will be following the summer reading theme of SUMMERTIME... AND THE READING IS EASY. Many activities and programs are already planned for a fun-packed summer. At the Taylor Library as well as the Derry Public Library, we will kick off our summer with the Derry Parks and Recreation Department with KIDS NIGHT OUT. On June 25 at 5:00 p.m., you are all invited to MacGregor Park (downtown Derry next to the Derry Public Library) for an evening of fun. Jump in the moon bounces provided by Fun Bounce, Inc. From there at 6:30 take in a show with Jim Casey's "Campardy". This high-energy performance includes dancing, trivia, etc. while learning. End the night with a movie in the park. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa will be shown. Bring along your blankets, lawn chairs and bug spray for an evening of fun.

During the month of June, you can register for summer reading at the Taylor Library. Get your reading charts and fill them in with the many books you will be reading this summer. Turn in a completed chart and be eligible to win several prizes that will be given away at our end-of-summer Awards Party on Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m.. That night we will announce the winner of our annual jelly bean contest, pull the winning name of our raffle basket and then we will give away the grand prize to a lucky reader who participated.

In July, take part in our story hours on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. You must pre-register as space is limited. On Wednesday afternoons, take part in a craft class. Learn something new this summer.

On July 9 at 6:30 p.m. our annual CARNIVAL NIGHT will take place. Come and play games, win prizes and end the evening with refreshments in our picnic grove.

On July 14 at 2 p.m., come to the library and meet Marty Kelley, a children's author and illustrator, and Steve Blunt, a children's song writer. They will team up and perform their SUMMER READING PARTY. Marty's books will be available to purchase. Why not get him to sign one for you!

On June 30 at 2 p.m. at the library, we will have a program presented: MOOSE ON THE LOOSE. Children ages Kindergarten and up will have fun learning about moose and doing a craft that afternoon.

On Aug. 4 at 2 p.m., come meet REPTILES ON THE MOVE. This program will be presented next door at the church. Come hold various reptiles and learn all about them. This program will certainly be fun for all those who especially love snakes, lizards, etc.

The summer reading program will end on Aug. 6 with our party and awards ceremony. If you have read for the library, come get your reading certificate and see if you are a winner of one of the many prizes being given away.

Check our website and the Derry Public Library's schedule of events as both libraries are working together to bring you many varied activities to keep the little ones busy all summer. The Derry Friends of the Libraries have sponsored many of these activities thanks to their year-round book sales. Thank you Friends for your help: it is most appreciated. Also this summer the Kids, Books and the Arts Grant program will be sponsoring the Reptiles on the Move program. Thanks goes to Ann Hoey at the State Library for organizing this.

For more information on any of the above programs, please call the Taylor Library at 432-7186. We will be glad to answer your questions. Also go to our website: www.taylorlibrary.org for more information.

Please visit the library to checkout the many new books that arrive daily for children and adults. If you don't see what you are looking for, ask a staff member to borrow it for you from the hundreds of libraries in the state. Remember, SUMMERTIME... AND THE READING IS EASY.
