It's a rather diverse group. There is a strong mix of races, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most were born in this country, but some were not.
They are doctors, welders, lawyers, actors, teachers and auto mechanics.
Or at least they will be some day. The future is theirs for the taking.
They are the members of the Class of 2021, and they are getting ready to start kindergarten this fall.
Over the next 13 years, these little boys and girls will grow into young men and women. How short a time period is that? Thirteen years ago President Clinton was finishing up his third year in office.
The members of the class of 2021 will, as adults, be the product of their experiences over the next 13 years. That puts the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of parents, teachers and, to a lesser degree, the community as a whole, to guide their progress.
It's a grave charge, the significance of which cannot be overstated, for the police logs are filled with the names of men and women who, at one time, were 5-year-olds dreaming of being doctors or lawyers or mechanics.
And the files of adoption agencies are filled with children created by children.
Be vigilant. The members of the Class of 2021 will face numerous obstacles and pitfalls on their road to a healthy adulthood, and they'll need all the help they can get.
It may not take a village to raise a child but it certainly requires a family and a neighborhood and schools.
Welcome Class of 2021, it promises to be an interesting 13 years.
