Our view: An adventure for the ages

There are challenges inherent with traveling halfway around the world. Difficulties with communication and cultural differences can be trying for even the most experienced globetrotter.

Add in the logistics associated with a performance tour involving some 350 teen musicians and their chaperones, and it would seem nearly impossible for Londonderry High's recent journey to China to go off without a hitch.

Still, it's difficult to believe the Marching Lancers could have anticipated some of the hurdles they would encounter on their Asian odyssey. These included a misplaced passport and visa that almost got one band member sent home before the tour even started; and a flash flood that trapped approximately one-third of the band while touring the city of Chengde.

In truth, these experiences only heightened the learning experience of the trip for the students. They were able to witness international diplomacy in action, as the passport/visa incident was handled deftly both in Hong Kong and back home in Londonderry. They also got a taste of the unpredictable and dangerous weather in China, conditions that locals deal with on a regular basis.

And this, after the band's original performance at the Olympic Music Festival was cancelled and the entire itinerary of the trip had to be rescheduled.

The students, chaperones and trip organizers deserve admiration for handling these challenges with grace and dignity and serving as worthy goodwill ambassadors for the United States of America. The image of the Marching Lancers performing atop the Great Wall will remain etched in the minds of members of the LHS community for years to come.

In our opinion, the China trip ranks as the top achievement in the storied history of the LHS Marching Band.
