TV ads are misleading

To the editor:

Welcome to the 2008 election year.

WMUR will take money from anyone for an ad from any so-called people with money. The two ads from www.unionfact.com have misleading information and lies about unions and how they do business. I would think that WMUR would have more respect for the state and local government employees along with our first responders like fire department and law enforcement personnel in which all belong to unions. It is shameful that this TV station will take money for this ad that runs during the news hour.

I call on all unions in the state of New Hampshire to call WMUR and tell them to pull all ads from this station out of respect for the hard-working men and women in the Granite State. As a union Carpenter (Local 118) in this state, I demand that WMUR remove the ad from www.unionfact.com. It is the right thing to do. Let's all stand together for change.

Obama doesn't support the unborn

To the editor:

Barack Obama supported infanticide in the Illinois Senate in 2001 when he was a state senator. He was the only senator to speak against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act on the floor of the Illinois Senate. This bill requires medical assistance for babies that are born alive. A similar bill passed the U.S. Senate in 2002, with 98 Senators voting for the bill, and 0 against.

As a state senator, Obama had the opportunity to amend the bill in Illinois to make the wording the same as the Born Alive bill which passed the U.S. Senate, but he refused to bring the bill up before his committee (Health and Human Services Committee). In total, he opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act four times.

The record unambiguously shows that as an Illinois state senator Barack was fiercely determined to protect infanticide instead of life by denying "personhood" status to born infants.

This is change we can believe in?

Playground organizers offer thanks

To the editor:

On the last weekend of May and the first weekend of June, the town of Londonderry came together to help build a community playground, and the members of the Project P.L.A.Y. committee want to thank all of the volunteers who helped make the undertaking such a success.

First, we appreciate everyone who came out to assemble the equipment, from high school-aged kids to 72-year old CC Mitchell, who came out just to get involved in a community effort. In particular, we want to thank the businesses and individuals who either donated their services, equipment, food and drinks for our Community Build Day: Andrea & Paul Baldwin of The Loan Arranger, Benson's Lumber & Hardware, David Nease/Prudential Verani Realty, Dunkin Donuts of Rockingham Road, ECM & Associates, Estey's Lumber, Katie McGarry and the girls of Girl Scout Troop 385, Hannafords of Londonderry, Harold Square Pizza, Jon Slater Concrete Foundations, Lilly's Gourmet Pasta, Mr. Steer, RCI Construction, Shaws of Londonderry, Stonyfield Farm Yogurt, Subway of Londonderry, T-Quip Sales & Rentals, Inc., Tom Garside and NH Boring, Vinny Curro and the Town of Londonderry.

Then, one week later, volunteers again came out and worked in the 95-degree-plus heat to help move about 400 yards of mulch. We would like to especially thank firefighter Dave Johnson of Johnson Landscaping, who came off of a 24-hour shift at the firehouse to work an additional six hours with us at the playground. We also appreciate the time and donations of Chrissy from the Londonderry High School, Mack's Apples, Papa Gino's and Trimmers Landscaping, Inc. Lastly, we are grateful for the services of Londonderry Fence and Pittore Bros. Paving later in the month for putting up the fencing and laying a new pathway respectively.

It felt so great to have the support of our family, friends and neighbors over those weekends, and we hope now that the community enjoys what we built together. More equipment, such as benches, a picnic area donated by JVKelly Group, Inc., and of course, the engraved pickets that so many of you bought to support the playground will be coming later this summer. Thank you again, Londonderry — you should be proud of your efforts in making this playground a reality!

Shaheen is the energy candidate

To the editor:

Jeanne Shaheen is all about a new energy future. As governor, Shaheen implemented clean energy initiatives that saved New Hampshire families and businesses almost $400 million, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions by millions of tons.

Unlike Shaheen, Republicans like Sen. John Sununu care more about the interests of big oil companies than about New Hampshire families. Just recently Sununu voted to give oil companies $13 billion in subsidies every year. This is $13 billion that could be put to better use investing in renewable energy. Renewable energy would decrease our dependence on foreign oil, protecting us from the whims of the international oil market. Instead, this money is being given to companies like Exxon, who last year posted $40.6 billion in profit, the highest profit of any company in history.

There is no quick fix for the problem of high gas prices. Instead of looking for a fast solution, this country needs to look to the future. The sooner this country invests in new energy, the sooner we will see the rewards of our decreased dependence on oil.
