  • Elizabeth Naomi "Bette" Houley, 100

    West Haven, CT — Elizabeth N. “Bette” Houley, of West Haven,CT, for 53 years the beloved wife of the late Joseph E. Houley, died peacefully, July 13, 2012, after a long life numbering 100+ years. Elizabeth was born in New Haven, December 26, 1911, a daughter of the late Webster W. and Inez Brockway Leland. She is the loving mother of Joseph P. Houley and his wife Linda, of Natick, MA, Elizabeth Colberg and her husband Donald, of Bethany, CT, and Kathleen Kemp and her husband Christopher, of Londonderry, NH; cherished grandmother of Richard (Tracy) Colberg, Criston (Lisa) Colberg, Mary-Elizabeth Kemp (Russell) Hauver, Craig (Rebecca) Kemp, Andrew Houley, and Virginia Houley; great grandmother of 4 dear great grandchildren, Samantha Colberg, Ryan Colberg, Ashley Colberg, and Mathew Charles Colberg. She also leaves two sisters, Marjorie Miller and Frances DeCarlo, both of West Haven. She was predeceased by her brother, Webster Leland. Bette was a communicant of Saint Lawrence Church, West Haven and a member of the Saint Therese’s Guild there. She performed the duties of Sacristan in the parish for many years, beginning in the late 50s. She was also recording secretary for the Notre Dame Mother’s Club from 1964 to 1966. Later in life, into her 80s, she enjoyed bowling with her sisters in a weekly league. She was truly a peacemaker at heart.

    Derry, NH — Emily S. Barton, 100, of Manchester, NH died Monday, July 16, 2012 at the Mt. Carmel Rehab and Nursing Center in Manchester. She was born on October 6, 1911 in Derry, NH, a daughter of the late Arthur and Icona (Pitman) Emery. Mrs. Barton was a longtime Derry resident and spent a few years living in Tilton, NH. In her early years, Mrs. Barton enjoyed sewing and knitting. She was a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

  • Dorothea M. Grandmaison, 91

    Derry, New Hampshire — Dorothea M. Grandmaison, 91, of Derry, NH, died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at her niece’s home in Derry. She was born on March 9, 1921 in Derry, NH, the daughter of the late Leo and Ethel (Frasier) Myette. Mrs. Grandmaison was a resident of Derry since 1993, formerly living in Nashua, NH, Hampton, NH and Florida. Dorothea was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Derry, Class of 1937. She and her husband Roger ran a rooming house at Hampton Beach called “The Bartlett”. She later was employed in the office for the Internal Revenue Service, Andover, MA until her retirement.

    Londonderry, NH — Leora A. (Nana) Jones, 91, of Londonderry, formerly of Tilton, NH, died Tuesday July 3, 2012 at the Hillsborough County Nursing Home in Goffstown after a period of declining health. She was born October 11, 1920 in Sherman, ME and was a daughter of the late John H. and Julia A. (Gould) McCordic. She was raised and educated in the Bristol, NH area and had been a longtime resident of Tilton, prior to moving to Londonderry to be with her daughter.

    Derry, NH — Eleanor M. Wood, 95, of Derry, NH died on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center, Derry. She was born on October 8, 1916 in Newport, NH, a daughter of the late Arthur C. and Grace M. (Kincaid) Bingham. She was a resident of Derry since 2009, formerly living in Florida for over 30 years. Ms. Wood graduated from Accounting School, then worked for many years with Selective Service and as a bookkeeper for True Value Hardware in FL retiring at the age of 89. She enjoyed playing piano, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and gardening. Eleanor was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Lester Chase Post #9 Cooties and the Military Order of VFW Navy Star Mothers.

  • Geraldine M. "Gerri" Paradis, 66

    Manchester, NH — Geraldine M. “Gerri” Paradis, 66, of Manchester, NH died Saturday June 23, 2012 at the Catholic Medical Center, Manchester. Gerri was born on October 30, 1945 in Boston, MA, a daughter of the late Joseph and Marie (Chester) Giuliano. She had resided in Manchester for the past seven months, formerly living Chester, NH for more than 40 years. In earlier years, she had worked for New England Telephone Co. in Boston. Gerri worked for Klev Bros. Shoe Co. for 25 years as well as C & B Electronics, both of Derry, NH. She and her husband George owned and operated Total Comfort Plumbing and Heating in Chester. Gerri served as Past Secretary and Treasurer for the AFLCIO. She enjoyed teaching crafts at the schools, and raising money for charity through the sale of her crafts. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was born in Glens Falls, NY on December 3, 1924, a daughter of the late James and Pearl (Bennett) McCloskey. She had been a resident of Derry since 1946, formerly living in Glens Falls, NY. She was a graduate of Glens Falls High School, Class of 1943. She and her husband owned the Ideal Grill in Derry for 20 years and then Cat-O-Nine Tails Restaurant in Derry for 19 years, retiring in 1978.

    Derry, NH — David H. Piper, 66, of Derry, NH died Tuesday May 22, 2012 at Parkland Medical Center, Derry following a brief illness. He was born on April 25, 1946 in Manchester, NH a son of the late Arnold W. and Doris A. (Holmes) Piper. Mr. Piper was a resident of Derry for 19 years, formerly stationed with the Army in numerous locations. He proudly served his country as a Combat Engineer with the US Army and retired after 25 years as a Master Sergeant. Dave was a member of the American Legion Lester Chase Post #9 in Derry serving as an integral part of the Honor Guard and also a member of the V.F.W. Post #1617. He was a member of the DAV. He had also been employed as a painter for Simpson’s Painting.

    Derry, NH — Mr. Davis was born in Boston a son of the late Bernard P. and Helene L. (Ostridge) Davis. He grew up in Watertown, MA, graduating from Watertown High School and later from Boston College, class of ’57. He served with the 3rd Infantry Division, U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. Mr. Davis had been employed for many years as an Automobile Executive with Volkswagon of America. He moved to Derry, NH in 1969 and had recently been a resident of Manchester, NH. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, May 18, 2012 at the Courville Nursing Center at the age of 82.

  • Gene T. Duston, 84

    Gene Tunney Duston , 84, husband of June C. (Green) Duston of Newcastle,Maine, died peacefully May 6, 2012 surrounded by his loving family at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta. He was born September 23, 1927 in Hampstead, NH, son of Levi E. and Myrtis C. (French) Duston. Gene graduated from Hampstead High School in 1945 and was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Hampstead Fire Department for 55 years and served on the Executive Committee, Board of Engineers and as Chief from 1957-1960. Gene served as Trustee for ten years for the Hampstead Congregational Church and was a member of the Steeple Committee. He loved working with youth in Hampstead and worked both with the Cub Scouts and Little League. Gene was also active in the community as a member of the School Building Committee for five years and was very proud of his service as Chairman of the Site Committee for the new middle school which resulted in the purchase of the 40 acres where the Hampstead Middle School was constructed. He served as Selectman from 1981-1983. He enjoyed skiing, gardening, watching the Red Sox, but most of all, he enjoyed his years with family and friends on the Bearcamp River in West Ossipee, New Hampshire.
