  • Cathleen Burns Elmer, 95

    Andover — Cathleen was born in Andover, Mass., and graduated cum laude from Abbot Academy. After obtaining her B.A. in English from Smith College, she received her M.A. from Boston College. Her career was full, teaching for eight years in secondary schools and later becoming the staff writer-editor for Scholastic Magazine and later Assistant to the Editor of the Norfolk District of the Massachusetts Medical Society. She married William Elmer in 1953. Their son, Edward, was born in 1958, and Mrs. Elmer turned to freelancing at home, first as a writer-editor for Ginn and Co. and Houghton Mifflin; later, as a book reviewer for the New York Times, the Boston Herald and Herald American, the Baltimore Sun, and the Washington Times.

  • Marjorie Ann "Marge" Shinault-Helms, 75

    Derry, NH — Marjorie Ann Shinault-Helms, 75, of Derry, N.H., passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2014, in the Parkland Medical Center, Derry. She was born on Dec. 13, 1938 in Derry, N.H., daughter of the late John and Marjorie “Tay” (Hall) Hull, and had been a lifelong Derry resident. Marjorie was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Derry, Class of 1956. She was a member of the Londonderry Baptist Church. She enjoyed summering in Alton Bay. Marjorie always put her family first and had many friends.

  • Miyoko S. Centner, 90

    Derry, NH — Miyoko S. Centner, 90, passed away with her family by her side on May 23, 2014, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Miyoko was born in Tokyo, Japan. She emigrated to the United States in 1952, and became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1962. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Merle Centner of Derry, N.H.; daughter, Helen Collipi and her husband, Ralph, of Londonderry, N.H.; son, Albert Centner and his wife, Susan, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; granddaughters, Nikki Sue Cruikshank and her husband, Scott, of Newbury, Mass., and Kristina Collipi and her friend, Benjamin Brown of Derry. She is also survived by family members still living in Japan.

  • Robert Warren Evans, 89

    Center Barnstead, NH — Robert Warren Evans, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Concord Hospital, Concord, N.H. Mr. Evans was born in Hillsboro, N.H., on Dec. 8, 1924, a son of the late Paul B. and Marion (Gilson) Evans. He was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy in Derry, Class of 1942. On Jan. 21, 1945, he married Barbara Jean Merrill of Derry, N.H. He went into the military (Navy) with several of his brothers in 1942 and served for three years as an engineer 1st class. After the war, he returned home to Derry and built his own house on Hillside Avenue. He got a job at PSNH in Manchester, where he became assistant to the vice president and worked there for 39 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Londonderry Presbyterian Church, a director of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, member and chairman of the Londonderry Board of Adjustment, a member of the American Legion and VFW, and one of the founding members and director of the Londonderry Bank and Trust. He moved his family to Londonderry in the 1950s and with his wife, Barbara, began running a summer camp (Twin Gate Farm), which they ran for over 20 years. He loved working on the farm and involving himself in all the operations of the farm including helping with haying well into his 80s. He was always busy with home improvement projects and kept himself in great shape. He was predeceased by five brothers, Paul Evans, Arthur Evans, Ronald Evans, Howard Evans and Lawrence Evans and grandson, Brandon Evans.

  • Mary A. Hargraves, 82

    Derry, NH — Mary A. (Quinn) Hargraves, age 82, of Derry, N.H., formerly of Lynn, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Lowell General Hospital, Saints Campus in Lowell, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late George J. Hargraves Jr., and the daughter of the late Joseph Michael and Flora Mae (Noyes) Quinn. Born in Boston, Mary was raised in Jamaica Plain. She was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas School in Jamaica Plain, and Katherine Gibbs School in Boston. Mary lived most of her life in Lynn, until moving to New Hampshire in recent years to be with her family. She worked as a bookkeeper for Oxford-Hopkins Shoe Company, Young’s Furniture and Lennox Hill Nursing Home. She enjoyed reading, shopping, dining out, and working Sudoko puzzles. She had a special fondness of caring for her daughter's Irish Setter dogs.

She was born July 17, 1960 in Medford, Mass., and was the daughter of Paul and Eileen (Coffey) Schacht. Deborah was raised and educated in Billerica, Mass. and had been a resident of Londonderry for the past 29 years.

    Londonderry, NH — John Giannetti, 78, of Londonderry, N.H., died Friday, May 2, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Dec. 17, 1935 in Natick, Mass., a son of the late John and Vincenza (Zappitelli) Giannetti. John was a resident of Londonderry since 1969, formerly living in New York City, N.Y. John was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School, and had been employed in investment banking in New York City and in Boston. During several illnesses, John remained resilient and continued his sense of humor, as well as continuing to be supportive to his family.

    Merrimac, MA — Sandy entered into eternal peace at home in Tennessee on April 11. She was born in Malden, Mass., and went to Haverhill and Pentucket schools. She worked at AT&T in North Andover, at the shoe shop and nursing homes in Haverhill, and lastly at Danville store in Danville, N.H. Sandy moved to Tennessee in 2011 to welcome the birth of her first grandchild. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Carr; father, Roland Gurley, and grandparents, Virginia and Edson Peck. She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her husband of 31 years, John Wagoner; son, Brandon Wagoner and his wife, Shannon; grandson, Derek; parents, Robert and Elaine Leatham; aunts, Sharon (Arthur) Benjamin, Nancy (Ed) Hamilton, Gloria Crumel, Ruth McKewen, and Uncle Charlie Peck. Also, several cousins, nieces, nephews, loving in-laws and a host of longtime friends.

    Londonderry, NH — Elizabeth H. Cross, 81, of Londonderry, N.H., passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 5, 1932 in Nashua, N.H., a daughter of the late Robert and Jennie (Hansen) Richardson. Mrs. Cross was at one time the Tax Collector in Londonderry. She worked as a sales associate for many years at Jordan Marsh, now known as Macy’s, until her retirement. She spent her winters in Florida and summered at her home in New Hampshire. Mrs. Cross was an avid reader, she enjoyed working in her yard, but the time spent with her family and friends is what brought her the most joy.

    Cross Junction, VA — Harriet Isabelle Hussey Imlay, 96, passed away peacefully at 2:30 p.m., April 13, 2014 in Cross Junction, Va. She was born December 1, 1917, in Londonderry, N.H. to Edward H. and Mary I. (Bailey) Hussey. She was married to Frederick H. Imlay for 73 years, until he passed away at 101 on Jan. 26, 2010. They lived in Hampton, Va. and Bethesda, Md. until 2010, when Harriet moved to Cross Junction, to be close to her daughter.

    Fond Du Lac, WI — Roberta O’Brien, 70, formerly of Center Barnstead, N.H. and Derry, N.H., died April 11, 2014 at her residence in Fond Du Lac, Wis., after a period of declining health. She was born September 19, 1943 in Salem, Mass., where she was raised and educated. She was a daughter of the late Horace and Alice (Sullivan) LeBlanc. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. O’Brien was employed at Hadco Printed Circuits in Derry for 27 years. She later moved to Center Barnstead and eventually relocated to Fond Du Lac, six years ago.

    Andover, MA — Rita M. Bartel, 89, of Andover, MA, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, in the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, MA. She was born in Cambridge, MA, on February 24, 1925, a daughter of the late Charles and Rose (McDonald) McCafferty. Having been raised in Cambridge, she was a graduate of Cambridge High & Latin School. Later, she resided in Tewksbury, MA for many years where she raised her family. She had worked for Macy's in Lowell, MA for many years, through three store names starting with Bon Marche' Dept. Store. Rita enjoyed her time spent at Atria Marland Place in Andover, MA, since July of 2013 where she resided in the Life Guidance Section. She was an avid reader. Rita will be remembered for being a very giving and generous person, asking nothing in return.

    Holland, IA — Andrew Edwin McDivitt Jr. was called home on January 22, 2014. He passed away at his home in Holland, Iowa that he shared with the love of his life, Marjorie Chase McDivitt, his wife of 63 years. They married on May 27, 1950. As we celebrate Ed's life we will often think of the great achievements he made since his birth on September 8, 1928, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, where he was born to his parents, Andrew Edwin McDivitt Sr. and Gertrude Curry McDivitt. He was raised with his younger brother, Donald Curry McDivitt, who left us in 2008.
