Helen Scott Metts Giddis, 85

Derry, NH — Helen (Scott) Metts Giddis, 85 of Derry, passed away Saturday May 19, 2012 at Parkland Medical Center of Derry after a long illness. Helen was the daughter of the late Edward H. and Hazel M. (Dougan) Scott. She was predeceased by her first husband, Ernest M. Metts and her second husband, Joseph (Jim) Giddis.

Helen attended Derry schools, Kilrea, Floyd and Oak St. Junior High, and graduated from Pinkerton Academy in 1944. She attended the Margaret Pillsbury School of Nursing in September 1944 in Concord, and graduated in 1947 from the Concord Hospital School of Nursing, after the merger of Pillsbury and Memorial Hospitals. She returned to Derry in 1953, when she and Ernest were married. She lived in Derry, Tehran, Iran and Sandown, NH. Helen was active in the PTA at both Grinnell and South Range Schools. She also volunteered as a “Room Mother” for all three of her children, and as a “Den Mother” for Cub Scout Pack #141.

Helen will be remembered for the many years she was a nurse and night supervisor at Parkland Medical Center. She was appointed night supervisor in 1971 at Alexander Eastman Hospital, and continued in that position with Parkland until her retirement in December of 1989.

Helen is survived by one brother, Wallace Scott and his wife Frie, her three children, a daughter, Kathleen “Kitty” Callender, of New Mexico, a son, Robert Metts and his wife Laurie of North Carolina, a son, Richard Metts and his wife Susan of Derry, Seven grandchildren, E.J. Thor and his wife Michelle, Jamie Vachon and her husband Andy, Rebecca Meehan and her husband Mike, Bethany Metts, Megan Metts, Geoffrey Metts, and his wife Nicole, Sarah Repko and her husband Christopher. Helen is also survived by 11 great grandchildren with one on the way.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours were Monday May 21, 2012 from 4 to 8pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St. Derry, NH. A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, at 10am in the funeral home, and burial was at Forest Hill Cemetery of East Derry. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Derry Food Pantry, or the ”Sonshine Soup Kitchen” both located at 1 Crystal Avenue, Derry, NH 03038.     Somerville, MA, Derry, NH — Francis "Frank" Collins, 66, of Derry, N.H., died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, in Parkland Medical Center in Derry, N.H. He was born in Somerville, Mass. on Oct. 4, 1947, a son of the late William and Christina (Burke) Collins. Frank had been a resident of Derry for the past 22 years, formerly living in Somerville. Before his retirement, he was employed by Coca-Cola in Needham, Mass. for several years. Frank enjoyed time spent at Lake Winnipesaukee, and was known for having a wealth of knowledge, particularly historical information and trivial facts. His biggest enjoyment was spending time with his immediate and extended family, and his beloved pets.

  • Col. (Ret.) Ernest Franklin Jacobs Jr.

    Londonderry, NH — Col. (Ret.) Ernest F. Jacobs, Jr., 90, of Londonderry, N.H., passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in St. Joseph, Mo. on May 28, 1924, a son of the late Ernest F. and Charlotte (Diefenbacher) Jacobs, Sr. Col. Jacobs proudly served his country with the U.S. Army, having been a combat veteran of three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a recipient of numerous medals including the Bronze Star Medal with V device, two Purple Hearts, and the WWII Victory Medal. Col. Jacobs was a member of the St. Joseph Masonic Lodge in St. Joseph, Mo., and a member of the American Legion Post #27 in Londonderry. He enjoyed trout fishing with his grandson, collecting model airplanes and he enjoyed yard work.

    Chester, NH — Kayla Lee Bertolami, 21, of Chester, N.H., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 20, 1993 in Lowell, Mass., a daughter of Karen (Belluardo) and David Bertolami Jr. Kayla was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Derry, Class of 2011. She was currently in her third year of college at St. Anselm College in Manchester, and was set for early graduation in December, 2014. She was majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Web Design as well as Business Management. Kayla was a member of the Venture Crew. She enjoyed kayaking, hiking, baking, helping others, but most of all spending time with family and friends. She was a bright light who was taken too soon and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Martha had been employed as a manager of the school lunch program in the Derry School System. Martha was well-known for her favorite saying, “Taa Daa."

He was born on April 26, 1927, New York, N.Y., a son of the late Abkar and Sandrough Krikorian. Mr. Krikorian received his BA in Pre-Law from Northeastern University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as a Special Investigator for the IRS for almost 40 years.
