Sandown — Barbara A. McCarthy, 79, of Sandown, NH, died January 18, 2014, at her home, after a period of failing health.

Born in Chicago, IL on July 20, 1934, she was the daughter of Timothy and Dorothy (Berwick) Driscoll.

Barbara graduated from Saint Mary High School, Lawrence, MA. She earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Merrimack College.

In her early years, she was a social worker at Lawrence General Hospital and taught at St. Augustine School in Lawrence.

Afterwards, she owned McCarthy’s Antiques in Derry. Until her retirement, she operated the Greater Derry Humane Society for thirty years.

She was a member of the New Hampshire General Court representing Rockingham County, District 5 from 2008 to 2010.

Barbara enjoyed traveling throughout the world. She published travel articles in several travel and leisure magazines.

Family members include her husband of forty-two years, John “Jack” F. McCarthy of Sandown; a sister, Katherine Morris of Colorado Springs, CO; a niece, Patricia Donahue; a nephew, Bruce Ordway; and several dear friends. She was predeceased by two sons, Patrick Kennedy and Robert Kennedy.

ARRANGEMENTS: Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
