Edgar Jacob Caldwell III, 79

Bolton. Mass. — Edgar Jacob Caldwell III, 79 years, passed away on November 25, 2012. Born January 19, 1933, Edgar was the only son of Anna Sherwood Clayton Caldwell and Edgar Jacob Caldwell, Jr.

He married Nancy Ruth Williams in 1955, divorced in 2001. He leaves behind three children, Christopher Bryan Caldwell, M.D., Matthew Williams Caldwell, M.D., Kelda Caldwell Simpson; and eight grandchildren, Courtney Caldwell, Nathaniel Caldwell, Henry Caldwell, Kathleen Caldwell, Garrett Caldwell, Jordan Caldwell, Molly Simpson, and Sally Simpson. Edgar lived with his partner and soul mate, Joanne M. Maddock in Scarborough Maine, and most recently Bolton. He is survived by three stepchildren, Laura Maddock, Sharon Kahler, and Michael Maddock.

He graduated from Pinkerton Academy in 1950 and was subsequently elected to the Academy's Hall of Fame in 2002. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1954, and the College of Medicine of the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College in 1958. Dr. Caldwell completed Internal Medicine training at the Mary Fletcher Hospital. He was a member of the United States Public Health Service serving at the National Institutes of Health from 1963 through 1966, following which he returned to the University of Vermont as an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, College of Medicine in the Department of Cardiology having been selected as a career development awardee of the NIH. He left the College of Medicine in 1971 to become the Director of Pulmonary Medicine and Respiratory Medicine at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine until 1982. He was a member of the Department of Critical Care Medicine where he was a clinical investigator. Dr. Caldwell was the author of numerous scientific papers and abstracts particularly in Cystic Fibrosis. At the Maine Medical Center he was a member of the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Team from 1971 through 2002 and was Director and founder of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. Dr. Caldwell was very active in the American Lung Association of Maine serving on the board of directors for thirty-four years.

Dr. Caldwell’s compassion and desire to continue to care for those with cystic fibrosis, led him to complete the Maine Medical Center Adult Psychiatry Residency program in 2003 and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training program in 2008. He practiced locum tenens adult, child and adolescent psychiatry in Maine and Massachusetts and most recently at the Family Services Inc., in Lawrence.

Edgar loved cooking, gardening and traveling, particularly to Italy. His other hobbies included running, hiking, cross country skiing, sailing, wine-making, beekeeping and biking, completing the Maine Lung Association Trek across Maine numerous times.

Edgar’s intellect, curiosity and sincere desire to mentor and encourage will be missed. He will be remembered as a loving, vibrant man who deeply cared for others.

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 15, at 1 p.m. at the Tuttle Road United Methodist Church, located at 52 Tuttle Road, Cumberland Center, Maine 04021.

    Derry, NH — Mark D. Haynes, Sr., 72, of Derry, N.H., died Thursday May 16, 2013, at his home in Derry, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brighton, Mass., on August 22, 1940, a son of the late Dewey O. and Elizabeth (Floyd) Haynes, and had been a resident of Derry for the past 32 years, formerly living in Brookline, Mass. He was a graduate of St. Columbkille High School in Brighton. Mr. Haynes was a U.S. Army veteran serving during Vietnam. He worked for over 30 years for Cambridge Brands in Cambridge, Mass. He enjoyed golfing and woodworking.

  • Ruth T. Wells, 88

    Sierra Madre, CA — Ruth Wells, 88, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2013, at The British Home in Sierra Madre, Calif. She was born June 9, 1924 in Londonderry, N.H., the youngest of three children of the late Prescott and Dorothy (Boyden) Torrey. She graduated from Pinkerton Academy in Derry, N.H., and later married her high school sweetheart, Donald C. Wells, becoming a Navy wife. After WWII, they settled down in Londonderry, where she was a member of the local chapter of The Grange and the Londonderry Presbyterian Church. After raising her three children, she and Don moved to Meredith, N.H., on the grounds of the Waukewan Golf Club, where she became an avid golfer. For many years she divided her time between homes in Meredith and Crystal River, Fla. Her husband of 54 years died in 1997.

  • Mervin Crabb, 81

    Palm Bay, FL — Mervin L. Crabb, 81, formerly of Derry, N.H., departed this life on Friday, May 10, 2013, in Palm Bay, Fla. Born on August 29, 1931, in Derry, Mervin was the child of the late Harland and Gladys Worster-Crabb. In 1953, he became a dedicated firefighter for the Derry Fire Department and was the first to achieve the rank of Deputy Fire Chief in the Town of Derry. He was also a proud member of the New Hampshire Fire Chief Association. Following retirement in 1986, he spent most of his golden years fishing, camping and traveling. Mervin and the love of his life, Patricia, relocated to Palm Bay, Fla., in 1993 where they enjoyed making new friends.

    Manchester By The Sea, MA — Virginia S. Ball, 87, of Rockport, Mass., died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Den-Mar Nursing Home in Rockport, Mass., surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 18, 1926, in Exeter, N.H., a daughter of the late Everard and Dorothy (Dearborn) Smith. Raised and educated in Derry, Ginny resided in Manchester by the Sea for more than 50 years. She was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Class of 1944 and was very active in sports. Following high school, she played basketball for the Derry Pin-ups. Ginny enjoyed her summer day on Singing Beach, traveling, and gardening. She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and enjoyed puzzles and entertaining her family. Ginny served most recently on the resident board at the Den-Mar Nursing Home.

    Londonderry, NH — Shirley W. Gilcreast, 86, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 12, 1927, in Nashua, N.H., a daughter of the late Neil and Fannie (Robie) Watts. Mrs. Gilcreast was a resident of Villa Crest Nursing Home for two years, formerly living in Derry, Sandown, and many years in Londonderry. She was the organist at Londonderry Presbyterian Church for over 47 years. She enjoyed playing cribbage and Yahtzee, as well as reading and quilting. Mrs. Gilcreast loved her family and spending time with them. She was a very kind, compassionate, and loving woman who always put others needs before her own.

She was employed for Filene’s Department Store in Manchester, N.H., for more than 25 years. Mrs. Bates enjoyed sailing with her husband, spending time on the beach in Maine, reading, and working in the garden. In addition, she loved spending time with her family.

  • Roland W. Desfosses, 82

    Derry, NH — Mr. Roland W. Desfosses, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, April 9, 2013, surrounded by his family, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry. Roland was born Sept. 14, 1930, to Pierre and Aleida (Lemay) Desfosses in Lawrence, Mass. He was a retired employee of Newark Atlantic Paper Company. Roland was a devout Roman Catholic and attended St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry. Roland was an Euchristic Minister and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a quiet, simple man and if you asked him what his greatest joy in life was, he would say "my family". He was known affectionately as "Pep" by all his grandchildren who loved to play with the wisps of his hair and make them stand straight up. He collected baseball caps and always had a collection of them in the rear window of his car. He enjoyed playing bingo with his wife, Helene, and would go to play regularly. Roland loved to root for the Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helene (Dube) Desfosses; three daughters, Elaine and her husband Raymond Robidoux, of Windham, N.H., Janet and her husband Daniel Desrosiers ,of Epping , N.H., Maryclaire and her husband Robert Plourde, of Derry, N.H.; four sons, Russell and his wife Carol Ann Desfosses, of Phoenix, Ariz., Donald and his wife Maureen Desfosses, of Sandown, N.H., Gene and his wife Paula Desfosses, of Salem, N.H., and Carl Desfosses, of Derry, N.H. He was also predeceased by sisters Beatrice Desfosses, Theresa Cowan, Gertrude Morasse, Irene Lavigne, Elizabeth Gelinas and his brother George Desfosses.
