LONDONDERRY — For the 21st year, Mack's Apples hosted its annual pie contest on Saturday, Jan. 29, inside the farm's packing house on Mammoth Road.
Thirty-eight pies entered by 30 contestants filled a 42-foot long set of tables waiting to be tasted by the lucky judges.
Twenty-three pies were traditional two-crust pies and 15 were nontraditional, meaning they could have one or two crusts and be filled with other ingredients in addition to apples.
Deborah Pierce of Derry took first place in the traditional category. Sabina Chen of Pelham came in second and Londonderry's Doreen Stubbs took third place.
Denise LaRoche of Hudson took first place in the nontraditional category. Londonderry's Samantha Morrill came in second and Tina Starner of Haverhill, third.
First-place winners received the 2011 Apple Pie Contest pie plate made by Great Bay Pottery, Mack's apples for every month from August through January, and a gift basket including Peterson Sugar House maple syrup, BeeRich Apiaries honey and a $50 Cafe Theresa gift certificate. The first-place winners' names are also engraved on the Pie Contest plaque, displayed at the farm.
The winning recipes are available in the farmstand market and online at macksapples.com. Mack's farm market will continue to be open daily into February.
