We need 603 reasons why N.H. is special

Help us find 603 reasons why N.H. is special

Three digits carry a lot of meaning — 603 says it all. Few states still have just one area code, but New Hampshire is one of them. That fact is just one of thousands of reasons why residents and former residents love the Granite State.

The staff of the Derry News and the New Hampshire edition of The Eagle-Tribune are counting on you, our readers, to help us come up with a list of at least 602 more reasons why New Hampshire is such a special place.

We’re launching a yearlong project we’re calling “603 Reasons.”

Once we have gathered those 603 reasons that make New Hampshire the place it is, we will report on dozens of them in depth over the course of the next 12 months.

But first we need your help. Does the state’s “Live Free or Die” motto sum it all up for you? Is it a ride over the Kancamagus Highway during foliage season that reaffirms this is the best place to live?

Many people say the absence of a sales or income tax makes New Hampshire attractive. If that’s one of the 603 reasons, we will look at what cost is associated with not having those taxes.

Does the sight of steam rising from Hank Peterson’s Londonderry sugarhouse in March warm your heart? We might take a look at the state’s maple trees, their collective health and the future of sugaring in the decades to come.

New Hampshire has the distinction of being the only state in the country without a seatbelt law for adults. If you believe in personal choices, that may make your list. If it does, we will look at highway safety records, voluntary seatbelt use and the loss of federal highway dollars.

You get the idea.

Now, we urge you to submit as many reasons as you choose why New Hampshire is special. We will count, analyze and report the top 603 reasons as soon as we reach that mark. From that point forward, readers can count on seeing at least one story a week based on those reasons.

Send your reasons to editor@derrynews.com, tweet them to @ETNHEditor, mail them to 46 W. Broadway, Derry, 03038, or post them on facebook.com/DerryNewsNH.

This project won’t work without you.

We look forward to your response.
