Londonderry students earns writing honors

LHS junior receives national award

LONDONDERRY — A Londonderry High School junior has earned honors for his talents in writing.

The 2013 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing chose Samuel Breslow as one of the top student writers in the competition.

The 17-year-old was one of 155 students chosen nationally from a nominated field of 753 students representing schools across the country. He was the only student from New Hampshire to be recognized.

He received a certificate and is encouraged to use the award information when it’s time to send in college applications.

For Samuel, good writing is one of many skills he hopes to continue to sharpen during his time remaining in high school.

“I tend to be interested in a lot of things,” he said. “Writing is just one of them.”

Those interests keep his mind moving in AP English and social studies classes, where he loves everything about political science and famous authors.

One of the requirements for his national honor was to submit an essay about what famous author, living or dead, he would love to sit down and chat with. He chose Mark Twain.

Another assignment asked students to create their own personal Mount Rushmore, whom they would choose and why they should have a place on the side of a famed mountain.

Samuel said he chose four people who offered four influential views and philosophies to the world — British philosopher John Stuart Mill, Italian physicist Galileo for his science work, the Dalai Lama for peace and scientist Carl Sagan.

They all portrayed what Samuel viewed as a perfect mix.

“It was (about choosing people) who tried to make the world a better place,” he said.

Samuel’s interest list is also full of history and politics. He loves the Vietnam War era, he said, and also learning about the goals and philosophies of U.S. presidents. He loves peace studies and finding out about everyone who worked hard to secure a safe world.
