---- — LONDONDERRY — May the best pie win.

Mack’s Apples is putting out the call for all apple pie bakers to enter this year’s pie contest.

The annual pie competition is back after not being held for several years. This year’s contest is Feb. 22 at the Mack’s Apple farm stand on Mammoth Road.

The farm stand is signing up contestants now and the list is getting long, according to Sandy Coulombe, a Mack’s employee.

She said the contest wasn’t held last year due to a lower than usual amount of apples that forced the farm stand store to close early for the season.

This year she said the contest will most likely draw a big crowd.

“Lots of people come in,” Coulombe said.

Sometimes contestants bring their pies in on judging day straight from the oven.

“I think they figure that gives them an edge,” Coulombe said.

Categories this year are traditional and non-traditional.

The traditional pies must be two crust versions with an apple filling. For non-traditional entries contestants can enter a pie made mostly with apples, but can add other ingredients like other fruits, nuts and cream.

Contestants must be 16 years old to enter. No commercial bakeries or restaurants are allowed to enter. Pies must arrive on contest day in a ready-to-eat form.

Judging will be done by a panel of 10, Coulombe said, made up of residents, town officials and anyone who might want to take on the duties to score the pies.

Coulombe said people offer to be a judge.

“They come in and ask if they can do it,” she said.

Coulombe expects about 50 or more pies to be entered in this year’s contest. It’s a popular community event.

“It’s for the fun of it,” she said. “The best year we ever had, there was a snowstorm. Everybody came, it was awesome.”

Winners will be honored in first, second and third place categories. Two winners will have their names displayed on the Great Apple Pie Plaque in the farm market and top recipes will be printed and distributed in the store.
