Londonderry news in brief

Key local board meetings scheduled

There are several key Londonderry board meetings scheduled as the new year gets underway.

They include the following:

Jan. 14 at 7 p.m., the school board will be holding a public hearing on the proposed $63 million operating budget for Fiscal Year 2011.

The proposed 5.8 percent increase in the budget has raised some eyebrows and may spark passionate debate due to the state's struggling economy.

On Wed. Jan. 13, the planning board will hold a workshop session to discuss, among other things, workforce housing.

This comes in the wake of a December town council meeting, at which the need for additional workforce housing was brought into question.

Council cuts Town Hall position to part-time

The Town Council has voted to cut a Town Hall administrative position from full to part-time, thus saving approximately $35,000, according to Town Manager Dave Caron.

The position, currently vacant, was most recently held by Carolyn O'Connor.

It was considered a "catch-all" position, involving administrative support responsibilities for several town departments. O'Connor was also involved in coordinating the Beautify Londonderry Program.

With the council vote, the position will be reduced from 40 hours a week to 32 hours a week.

Previously, the position had cost the town approximately $84,500 per year, including benefits.

Caron says the new, part-time position, will be advertised with a pay rate of between $20-27 per hour.

According to Caron, some of the position's responsibilities will go back to the respective departments.

The Solid Waste Committee will take on the Beautify Londonderry project as a volunteer-only project.
