The Londonderry Leach Library will host a presentation, "Dr. Sherlock Holmes," by James Krasner on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m.
Using clips from the TV show "House," based on the Sherlock Holmes stories, Krasner offers insight into the relationship between doctors and detectives.
Krasner is professor of English at the University of New Hampshire. His research focuses on British Victorian literature, as well as the field of medical humanities, which uses literary analysis to understand the relationship between doctors, patients and caregivers.
During this program, Krasner will explore the importance of the medical profession to the first great detective — Sherlock Holmes.
Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Holmes series, was himself a doctor and modeled Holmes on his medical school professor Dr. Joseph Bell. Krasner will examine how Holmes's detection is based on medical diagnostics, which became the basis for "House."
The event is free and open to the public, and will be held in the library's lower-level meeting room. Light refreshments will be served.
