South School students deliver the goods

LONDONDERRY — It was a banner day at South Elementary School.

The school’s Student Council organized a “Thanksgiving Sharing” food drive to support local families in need.

Firefighters came to the school to pick up the 4,236 items collected. That is 1,674 more items than collected last year.

Food was packed into 147 boxes and loaded onto the fire department trucks.

All classes met their goals for food donations, each collecting 100 or more items.

The school is also participating in other holiday efforts to help others. The “Adopt-A-Family” program will give the school community a chance to adopt 10 families and provide them with gifts. Unwrapped gifts will be collected at the school the week of Dec. 2-6.

Another event is the school’s third annual Breakfast With Santa on Dec. 7 from 8 to 11 a.m. Breakfast will be served until 10:30 a.m. and then families can visit with Santa and have photos taken. The Student Council will host a Candy Cane Cake Walk during the breakfast to raise money to offset the fifth-grade end-of-year celebration.

Raffle tickets will be sold that day for prizes, including a ride to school in a fire truck, a ride to school in a police car and a five-day Caribbean cruise.

Raffle tickets for these prizes are $5 each or $10 for three, and may be pre-ordered. Tickets for regular raffle items are $1 each or six tickets for $5 and are available at the door on breakfast day.
