Londonderry seniors will be on the move

Center closes for renovations; programs move to Lions hall

LONDONDERRY — Senior citizens will be on the move during a major renovation project.

The senior center at Mayflower Grange is due for improvements to its roof and other areas, a project that topped the priority list of town capital improvement projects.

The first priority is to repair the roof over the auditorium.

During the work, senior activities will be held at the Lions Club Hall at 256 Mammoth Road. Tai chi classes will be held next door at Londonderry United Methodist Church.

Programs will be held there every day except Tuesday.

Rockingham Nutrition Meals on Wheels will be served Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The center officially closed Nov. 22 ; furniture and supplies were moved to the Lions Hall earlier this week.

Programs will officially begin Dec. 2 at the Lions Hall. The senior center is slated to reopen Jan. 2, 2014.

It will be a busy time, but good once the repairs are done, Gladys Frederick said.

Repairs not include roofing and new trusses, but also that side of the building will get a new coat of interior paint.

The Mayflower Grange dates back to the early 1900s, when it was used for various community events and meetings.

Repairs to the building are long overdue, members say.

During a recent Capital Improvement Projects meeting, senior center representatives told town officials there was still much work to be done.

The center’s roof topped the list. When it snows heavily, the roof needs to be cleared often.

New parking is proposed for the rear of the historic building.

Frederick said the roofing work is one step toward making the center a safe location.

“Hopefully, in 2015, they’ll do some expansion work,” she said.

Areas ripe for expansion include the kitchen, bathrooms and office space.
