Londonderry Rail Trail awarded grant funding

By Julie Huss

---- — LONDONDERRY — The town’s trail group got another vote of support.

Londonderry Trailways received a $100,000 matching funds Land and Water Conservation grant from the New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development, Parks and Recreation Division.

The money will go to support the Rail Trail Peat Bog section.

The town’s trail system is being built on the abandoned Manchester-Lawrence railway corridor. Upon completion, it will be a 6.4-mile, multi-use, all-season area for walking, biking, skiing and other activities.

The recent grant will be used to help pave a 1.4-mile parcel of the trail system beginning at Liberty Drive.

Another section, Phase I, runs from the Exit 5 park-and-ride area to North Elementary School. That trail was supported by a town warrant article in March, when voters approved spending $227,000 to help with paving costs. Other individual and business donations also supported this section of the trail.

That paving could be done by mid-November.

Londonderry Trailways project director Bob Rimol said the most recent state funding was appreciated.

“Opening the Peat Bog section of the trail will not only provide access to beautiful wooded areas, but will also provide access to pristine waterways,” he said.

Rimol said trail volunteers have been cleaning up the wetland areas in the Peat Bog section. The town also gets that much closer to being part of the region’s overall system.

“Opening this section brings the Londonderry trail closer to connecting to the Derry and Windham trails,” Rimol said.

Evenually, town systems will become part of the 150-mile Granite State Rail Trail that runs from Lebanon near the Vermont border to Salem at the Massachusetts border.

Trailways has three years to comply with the provisions of the grant, including raising the matching funds.
