LONDONDERRY — The St. Jude Parish Community Service Committee will once again sponsor its annual Fall American Red Cross Blood Drive.
The drive will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall at 435 Mammoth Road.
As in past years, the need for blood donors and products is tremendous. However, with the recent Hurricane Sandy disaster, many drives were canceled for many days due to the conditions and loss of power.
This has greatly diminished the amount of blood products stored as we enter the busy winter and holiday season. Currently, the Red Cross has less than a few days of available blood products for the New England region. This supply is needed for routine operations, emergency surgeries, etc. Without a replenishment of supply, many routine procedures will need to be postponed.
Ninety-five percent of the U.S. population is able to donate blood, but only 5 percent actually does. The Red Cross is working on new procedures to make the donation process easier, take less time and be more comfortable for all.
As with all of our drives, there will be no packaged food her. Many St. Jude volunteers will bake homemade treats and “internationally famous” Chef Jim will once again prepare his popular chili and chicken soup.
Additionally, the Red Cross will have giveaways as well for all blood donors. For more information on the drive, email Vinny Curro at firstname.lastname@example.org.
