Londonderry seniors support Warm Homes

LONDONDERRY — Seniors in Londonderry are helping people stay warm this winter.

Seniors recently donated $2,000 to the Warm Homes organization to help support the group’s efforts to provide fuel assistance to residents in need. This is the eighth year the seniors have donated.

Warm Homes began eight years ago under the direction of founder Kathy Wagner. Local seniors were right there to offer early support of the group’s efforts to help those in need.

Warm Homes is a division of the organization Londonderry Comforts and provides limited fuel assistance to Londonderry residents. People are entitled to a onetime delivery of 100 gallons of heating fuel, either gas or oil, or the equivalent dollar amount toward electric heat or wood.

Those who are out of work, ill or older citizens can qualify for help. The organization also refers people to other resources that may be able to help in other areas.

Seniors administrator and treasurer Gladys Frederick said the Londonderry Senior Center and its members do regular events to raise money to support Warm Homes and other missions in the community.

“We do a lot of fundraising,” Frederick said.

She said all activities are senior center-based, not sanctioned by the town.

Frederick said seniors come to the center every day to enjoy a big variety of activities, programs and health screenings, and it’s good to know that if someone needed assistance with heating fuel, Warm Homes would be there.

“That makes me feel good,” she said.

Kathy Wagner accepted the $2,000 check from Frederick and other senior representatives last week at the center.

Wagner said she appreciates what the seniors do and said having the older citizens donate to Warm Homes may make them more comfortable to ask for help when they may need it. In addition to the senior support, schools are also reaching out to support Warm Homes in the annual “Dollar Days” fundraising campaign. All students in the Londonderry School District are asked to donate $1 to Warm Homes. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 14.

Anyone interested in donating to Warm Homes can send donations to Warm Homes, P.O. Box 329, Londonderry, 03053.
