Formerlawmaker wants another shot

Local candidates file to run for House

DERRY — She spent more than two decades serving her town as a state representative and now wants to give Concord another shot.

Phyllis Katsakiores has signed up to run for Derry state representative for District 6.

She joins other incumbents and newcomers jumping into the primary election pool for September.

It’s time for another try, she said.

“People are calling me and saying I wish you were still there,” she said. “I like the people, I have good friends there. I am running because I want to be able to support constituents.”

Katsakiores, a Republican, spent 28 years in the Statehouse, serving side by side with her husband, George, who died in 2012 after his own 28 years working in Concord.

In 2012, she decided to end her representative run and was elected to the Derry Town Council that year.

She went on to run against Kevin Coyle in the Republican Rockingham County District 3 county commissioner primary that same year. Coyle eventually won the election.

Katsakiores said she really missed the work, the contacts and people she met. After so many years, she said, those ties were strong.

“I just really missed it,” she said. “George and I were there 28 years together.”

She said she thinks they may have been the longest couple serving together as a political duo.

“I don’t think any other couple served as long as we did,” she said.

Katsakiores said she doesn’t do it for the money, but wants to get back into the state government world and help people.

“We get paid $100,” she said. “And they take taxes out, so we get about $86. You certainly don’t do it for the money.”

Katsakiores said she will turn 80 in September, but her age has nothing to do with her work ethic and desire to serve.

In the meantime, her work with the Derry Town Council is keeping her busy as the group works on selecting a new town administrator.
