More projects added to cable replacement

LONDONDERRY — PSNH has added to its list of underground cable work in town.

The utility will be replacing 1,000 feet of underground cable along Winding Pond Road at Century Village Condominiums.

The utility will replace two sections of the main cable line coming into the development.

Digging trenches and other work will begin in mid-November and should be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting.

The job is part of a long list of cable replacement projects. This year, PSNH has 15 underground cable projects planned for Londonderry, estimated to cost $1.9 million.

Several projects have been completed, others are underway or in the design phase.

A large portion of PSNH’s underground cable is in Londonderry, one of the first communities to require new developers to place their utilities underground.

Now Londonderry, along with other surrounding communities, has large amounts of aging underground cable that dates back to the 1970s and 1980s.

In 2005, PSNH put programs in place to address the older underground cables.

Two early projects in town replaced cables on Shasta Drive and Rolling Ridge Road.

In 2006, approximately $1 million was spent on those two developments.

Completed cable projects are at Arrow Head Estates, Woodland Village, Century Village and Olde Country Village.

Projects underway or being designed include Red Deer Road, Royal Lane, Wellington Woods and Wimbleton Estates.

All projects are set to be completed by year’s end.

Earlier this year, town councilors met with PSNH representatives to talk about service, power outages, and how communication between town and utility could be improved.

PSNH offered to come back before the town to give updates on when work is being done, what areas of town are affected and how the systems work.

This could help alleviate residents’ stress when it comes to power outages and projects being done in their neighborhoods.
