---- — LONDONDERRY — It’s almost time to light the town’s trees.

Londonderry hosts its annual tree-lighting event on the Town Common Dec. 8, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive on a fire truck at approximately 4 p.m. for the official lighting ceremony.

Local clubs, organizations and churches began decorating 24 trees placed on the Common Sunday to prepare for the celebration. Groups adopt the trees and decorate them with many original designs to stand on the Common for the season.

The Londonderry Rotary Club works every year with youth groups and nonprofit organizations to put on the event.

Entertainment on Dec. 8 includes the STEP performers and musicians from Londonderry Christian Church.

“The STEP students are incredibly excited to be involved in such a wonderful Londonderry tradition,” said Yvonne Sarafinis, the group’s musical director. “They love performing and reaching out to the community and are excited to get bundled up to help families get into the holiday spirit.”

She said performances will include solo and group numbers, including many holiday favorites and seasonal classics.

John Timmeny, president of the Londonderry Rotary Club, said the annual tree lighting creates a lot of happy memories to the community’s families.

“For more than 20 years, our members have been proud to organize this event,” he said.

Timmeny said Rotary members set up the trees and lights prior to groups taking over the job of decorating.

“We love to see how it generates big smiles and fosters happy memories,” he said.

All are encouraged to dress warmly for the event. Refreshments will be served. Following the tree lighting, Santa will be available for photos and visits with children.
