Londonderry Lions honor community volunteers

Derry News

---- — LONDONDERRY — The Londonderry Lions Club honored four community supporters at its recent Community Appreciation Dinner.

The Lions traditionally honor those in the community who give of themselves to provide special services to the town.

Those honored this year are Londonderry High School assistant principal Katie Sullivan; Kathy Wagner, Warm Homes founder and strong supporter of Old Home Day and other organizations; Steve Young, School Board member, co-creator of a virtual visitor’s center and supporter of the Lions with his online news publication, and Winston Dorman, a local business owner and strong Lions supporter.

Sullivan is the founder and advisor to the High School’s “Pay it Forward” program, a nonprofit group that does volunteer work in the community. She was also recognized for her attention to organizing an annual veterans breakfast at the high school.

Wagner not only founded Warm Homes, an organization offering fuel assistance to those in need, but she also has served as a town councilor, library trustee, a Heritage Commission member and a member of the Planning Board.

Young’s online news publication has supported the Lions for many years. Club members noted his generosity in also providing space to help the Lions get the word out about their community efforts.

Dorman is a Londonderry resident who has picked up and delivered the Lions Club Christmas trees for many years, traveling to St. Johnsbury, Vt., to gather the trees and bring them back to town for the annual sale.

Lions also honored Dorman for donating a portion of his trucking fees back to the Lions Club to use for their community projects and efforts.

The Londonderry Lions hosts fundraising efforts all year long, with more than $20,000 returned back to the community in the form of high school scholarships, eyeglasses and hearing aid assistance.

The club also provides food, including turkeys, for the community Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, working with local fire officials and schools to help those in need through the holiday season.
