Search is on again for Londonderry town leader

LONDONDERRY — The search for a new town manager is taking a little longer than expected.

Officials were all set to pick the town’s next manager when the favorite candidate pulled out of the running.

The search process will now begin again.

The Town Council and police Chief and acting Town Manager Willliam Hart are back to square one.

Initial interest was brisk, Hart said. About 50 people applied for the job the town hoped to fill by April 1.

The field was narrowed down to the top 10 candidates, then to a few finalists.

Londonderry officials were ready to make an offer, Hart said, but it was too late. They found out their top choice had taken another position.

The candidate pool was strong, he said, but they’re going to launch a new search.

“We received a number of candidates, all of whom had outstanding credentials,” Hart said.

Hart said the setback was a little frustrating.

The job will be re-advertised and the process will start over to find the next town manager.

“We feel strongly that it really has to be the right fit,” he said.

Hart was named the interim town manager last June after longtime manager David Caron resigned.

April 1 is no longer a realistic start date for the town’s next leader, he said. Officials would like to have a candidate on board in April, with a start date by July 1.
