---- — LONDONDERRY — It was one last goodbye.
As the school year ended in Londonderry on June 21, staff, students and families at Matthew Thornton Elementary School paid one last bit of respect to retiring principal Carol Mack.
As the day ended, the Matthew Thornton community circled the school building and Mack made her rounds to say goodbye.
Some students held signs, others just waited for that special hug they know so well.
Mack has had a long history at Matthew Thornton, dating back to 1983 when she was an active classroom volunteer. After college and more experience, she landed a teaching job and eventually took the helm as principal.
Over the past few months, Mack’s farewells have included surprise parties, special appearances to lead the high school band, special gifts and activities.
The last day of school proved to be one last chance for many to say goodbye.
As part of the final day, Mack was honored with a fly-over by a helicopter, courtesy of one student’s connections.
Sharon Putney was named as Mack’s replacement and will take over as principal when school opens in August.
