LONDONDERRY — The spiffy looking bell-ringer often stationed outside the Market Basket in the evenings is none other than Richard Canuel, the town’s building and health inspector.
“I wanted to be festive and be a part of it,” Canuel said.
Of his impressive outfit he said, “It’s not authentic Dickens, but close enough to the era.”
His clothing and his welcoming smile and greeting seemed to be doing the trick one night last week.
Many shoppers donated, including a number of them who first walked past Canuel and the red kettle, then turned around and made a donation.
It’s Canuel’s first year volunteering for the Salvation Army, but he’s joined in a big way.
He usually can be seen outside the grocery store in the evenings, from 6 to 9 p.m. He said he volunteers after work when he has the time.
“There are a lot of nice people. People are actually very cheerful,” he said. “It’s been a nice experience.”
