YMCA to dedicate new pool

LONDONDERRY — The YMCA of Greater Londonderry will be making a big splash in the community when it dedicates its new pool on Saturday, June 9.

The celebration will give the public a chance to see the new heated, outdoor in-ground pool — the Schaefer Community Pool — at the facility on Rockingham Road.

The celebration includes an official ribbon-cutting and first "jump in" for the pool at noon, followed by a barbecue and camp open house from 1 to 3 p.m.

The YMCA held a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony last fall for the town's first community swimming pool.

Last week, crews were putting the finishing touches on some exterior landscaping around the pool. The pool was filled and the lap dividers were installed.

The pool is 25 meters long with six lanes. It replaces two 4-foot-deep oval pools that were previously used for summer camps.

The pool is named for Schaefer Mortgage, a lead sponsor of the project, part of the YMCA's $750,000 capital improvement plan, that will also include an outdoor multipurpose sports complex.

The pool has a handicapped-accessible lift chair so programming for adaptive aquatics programs can be scheduled.

Londonderry branch director Lisa Fitzgerald said the pool will be a great asset to the community and the YMCA.

"We are very excited to be able to offer that up to the community," Fitzgerald said.

Programs planned include lap swims, aquatic Zumba and open swim times, along with regular swimming lessons.

Fitzgerald said the pool will be used mainly for summer camp programs, but the Y hopes to open it up to the community for special events, programs and rentals.

Tiles for the Giving Wall, a tiled mural that will be displayed in the pool area, will show donors' messages imprinted on the tiles.

The YMCA opened in 1999 and serves 175 to 180 campers during its summer programs.
