LONDONDERRY — Adam Rhan recently spent four weeks at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.
Rhan, who will be a senior at Londonderry High School this fall, is the third student from Londonderry to be accepted to the prestigious camp under music director Andy Soucy's watch. He received a scholarship for the four-week program.
"He's a terrific musician," Soucy said. "While there, he was the top drummer in the program's jazz ensemble."
Interlochen Arts Camp attracts students, faculty and staff from all 50 states and more than 40 countries. Student-artists learn from world-class instructors and produce hundreds of presentations each summer in dance, theater, creative writing, visual arts, music and film.
"I really liked the fact that I was around 40 really talented musicians," Rhan said, "people who were really into their instrument."
While at Interlochen, Rhan, 17, studied with renowned jazz drummer Peter Erskine. Rhan will lead the Lancers marching band drum line this year as its captain. He has an exciting year ahead with the band, which will perform in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on New Year's Day.
Rhan is also a drummer for Londonderry High's jazz ensemble and a percussionist in the school's symphonic band. He is a member of the Tri-M Honor Society.
Outside Londonderry High, Rhan is a member of the Manchester Community Music School's Jazz Band and plays drums for the Jazz Cats. He has shared his talent with the Manchester Choral Society, the Interfaith Choir and the Londonderry United Methodist Church.
Rhan, the son of Jon and Karen Rhan, has been playing drums since the sixth grade and currently studies with Steve Michaud of Merrimack.
"I love to perform," Adam Rhan said. "I'll be looking at all types of music and trying to be more versatile."
He is looking into the Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music and Hart School of Music as possibilities after he graduates from Londonderry High.
