Derry, Londonderry honor fallen veterans

Fallen veterans and those currently serving in the military will be honored on Memorial Day, May 28.

Ceremonies, special events, and parades will fill the day in both Derry and Londonderry, with local veterans marching and honoring their comrades.

In Derry, the combined efforts of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1617, American Legion Post 9, and Derry Parks and Recreation begin Memorial Day with briefings at the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign War post homes at 7:30 a.m., following by observances at Holy Cross Cemetery, Forest Hill Cemetery and the GAR monument.

The annual Derry Memorial Day parade kicks off from Hood Commons at 11 a.m. and marches down Crystal Avenue to East Broadway. It ends at MacGregor Park, where traditional ceremonies will take place at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Parade participants include fire department honor guard, local bands, Red Star Twirlers, Derry Little League, and other local organizations and businesses.

The park service includes special guest speakers, music, a Town Council proclamation and the laying of wreaths at the park's war monuments.

In Londonderry, American Legion Post 27 hosts traditional Memorial Day observances beginning with a parade at 10 a.m. beginning at Londonderry High School.

The parade marches down Mammoth Road to Glenwood Cemetery, then on to the Town Common for services.

American Legion officials will host a cookout at the Legion hall.

In the days leading up to Memorial Day, local veterans groups will be out in force for the annual Buddy Poppy distribution, with proceeds supporting veterans groups.
