SPECTATOR

Kids, what kids?

Parents find something to do once the kids leave home.

The license plate on a black BMW convertible with a lone middle-age man at the wheel read: EMPTNST.

Drip, drip, drip

After roof repairs were completed on the fieldhouse at Pinkerton Academy, Headmaster Mary Anderson said school officials finally could breathe a dry sigh of relief.

"This is the first time in 23 years that roof hasn't leaked," Anderson said. "They've been chasing leaks."

Smile for the camera

The cable television studio had some technical difficulties during the last Town Council meeting in Londonderry, so the event could not be broadcast live.

The four councilors present were still in the limelight, however, when five Korean journalists arrived while the meeting was in progress and starting snapping photos.

The visitors were in town to study the Town Meeting form of government. They did wonder why the meeting was so poorly attended.

Call to spider duty

The first order of duty for newly minted Derry police officer Marc Johnson on Thursday at the police station was stomping on a fast-moving spider making its way toward his family and friends who were on hand to congratulate him.

Saying goodbye

Adele Boeske, longtime Derry Public Library director of children's services, will bid farewell to her post soon at the library after 12 years of service to the town's youngest readers.

A special goodbye party was held on Aug. 25.

A lot of pork for band

The Londonderry Marching Lancers have $5,000 added to their Rose Bowl account, thanks to a fundraiser held during Mack's Peach Festival.

Two shifts of 24 parent volunteers greeted visitors, helped with parking, and sold 600 pulled pork sandwiches, 400 peach shortcakes drizzled with maple syrup and 50 gallons of lemonade.
