Inventioneers take Champion's Award
LONDONDERRY — The Inventioneers, New Hampshire's three-time state FIRST LEGO League champions and national and international award winners, took the top award at the qualifying tournament held at Daniel Webster College on Nov. 21.
FLL is a science competition for elementary and middle school students.
The Londonderry-based team had the top robot score after the three table competitions and excelled in the three other areas of the tournament - research project, teamwork, and technical/engineering, according to a release. The Champion's Award qualifies the Inventioneers for the state FLL tournament to be held on Dec. 6 at Bedford High School. Team members are Paige Balcom, TJ Evarts, Emily Balcom, Jaiden Evarts, Kate Balcom and newcomer Bryeton Evarts.
"FIRST LEGO League is the best program out there to keep kids excited about science and technology," said TJ, 14.
In addition to preparing for the tournament, the Inventioneers set their goal to help as many new teams get started and succeed as possible. Many of the teams they've worked with also had a great showing at tournaments held around the state.
"We're so happy that 12 teams started as a direct result of our workshop called the 'ABCs of FLL,' which we offered in August," said Paige, 15.
The Inventioneers are determined to share the FLL message with as many kids as possible in the 9- to 14-year-old age group.
"We have to keep kids inventing and learning about solving today's problems - then we'll be ready to solve tomorrow's problems," said Jaiden, 12.
The Dec. 6 N.H. FLL event is free and the robot competition area and staging areas are open to the public all day.
"Anyone with a child interested in LEGOs, science, or robots shouldn't miss the chance to check out the state tournament," said Emily, 13. "FLL calls it 'sports for the mind'."
