SPECTATOR

Out like a lion

Mother Nature seems to be reluctant to let winter release the region from its icy grasp and let the blooming begin.

But some hardy plants are pushing into spring anyway.

Crystal Lee Spaulding took this picture of some crocuses coming up through the snow in East Derry.

Stopping for spring

A stop sign at Stark Road in Derry is showing some springtime colors. What began as a simple yarn bow adorning the sign has grown into a more elaborate decorating mission with more yarn added along with a colorful paint job. Another stop sign in Londonderry has sported its own happy smiling face design for several years.

Think pink

Londonderry School Board member Steve Young joked at a recent meeting that both the new board chairman and vice chairman were women ... and that was a good thing.

“There’s nothing wrong with women being in charge,” Young said.

After that, the women on the board suggested the female members wear pink to the next meeting.

Floral farewell

Londonderry School District secretary Mary Soares got a fond farewell at a meeting March 18. She has stepped down from the job.

“I get my flowers, don’t I?” Soares asked. “That’s the only reason I quit.”

A big bouquet was awarded and Soares also received a standing ovation.
