LONDONDERRY — It was a closer game than usual, but in the end, the police beat the firefighters, 23-18, at the annual Old Home Day softball game Friday night.
"We felt bad and then gave them a few runs at the end to get their hopes up," said police dispatcher Bobby Jones, who organizes the team for the men in blue each year.
This was Jones' 22nd year playing the Old Home Day game.
"I was the oldest one on the team this year," he said. "That made me feel a little bad."
Officer Chuck Nickerson pitched for the police team and Chief Kevin MacCaffrie for the fire team.
"MacCaffrie was a disgruntled pitcher," Jones said. "He kept arguing with the umpire, Frank Holdsworth."
Jones said the stars of the game were officers Tommy Olson, Chuck Nickerson and Shaun Goodnow, who hit a home run.
MacCaffrie wasn't available for comment Monday, but Capt. Jim Roger, who attended the game as a spectator, said the game was a lot of fun.
Roger said firefighters Scott Geraghty and Bo Butler were consistent hitters for the men in red.
"The good news is that it's always a winner for us," he said. "The money goes to Camp Pride for the Lions Club."
