Derry woman critically injured in crash

DERRY — A 20-year-old Derry woman is in critical condition at a Boston hospital with serious head injuries after her sport utility vehicle collided with a pickup truck Thursday afternoon.

Kimberly Lynch, of 5 Blunt Drive, was flown by medical helicopter to Brigham and Women's Hospital after a collision with Robert Lightizer, 26, of Newton at the intersection of Old Chester and Cross roads just before 1 p.m.

When police arrived, they found Lynch's 1997 Honda CR-V and Lightizer's 2001 Ford F-350 against a tree on nearby Beaver Lake Road, according to police.

Cross, Beaver Lake and Old Chester roads were closed for several hours while the Derry police accident reconstruction team investigated. The Derry police crime scene unit also was on scene.

An initial investigation concluded that Lightizer was traveling north on Cross Road and collided with Lynch, who was traveling on Old Chester Road.

Lightizer was transported to Parkland Medical Center with minor injuries, while Lynch suffered head injuries, police said. Lynch was in critical condition at Brigham and Women's last night, a hospital spokesman said.

Neither vehicle had passengers, police said.

The accident is under investigation, but police said they do not believe alcohol was a factor.

Police would not say if they believed speed was a factor, but Chris Merrill, who lives at the corner of Beaver Lake and Old Chester roads, said the intersection has a history of speeding cars and accidents.

An accident a few years ago sent a car across his front yard, taking out an above-ground swimming pool.

"We can't even sit out here and have a barbecue because it's so bad," Merrill said while standing in his front yard.

Merrill said he routinely sees cars traveling up to 60 mph down Old Chester Road. He said he would like to see stop signs on Old Chester Road in addition to the two on Cross and Beaver Lake roads.
