Water project to benefit East Derry

DERRY — Crews have begun work on a water main extension project in East Derry to help with supply and quality issues for homes in that area.

Work began on Sept. 5 to install 8,500 linear feet of new water main along Hampstead Road, East Derry Road and Adams Pond Road. The project is cosponsored by the town and Pennichuck Water Inc.

During a typical work day, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, East Derry/Hampstead Road and Adams Pond Road will be limited to one lane of traffic in the area of excavation, but both lanes will be open every night and on weekends.

While work is in progress, access to individual driveways may be limited.

The Town Council approved the agreement last spring to help resolve issues with water quality and supply for customers of the Meadowbrook Community System.

East Derry customers have historically had water issues, according to deputy director of public works Tom Carrier. He told councilors in April that the agreement with Pennichuck would improve water service to residents living in the affected areas.

The work extends the Derry municipal water system from its current location at Pond and East Derry Roads, heading east along East Derry/Hampstead Road, then 6,700 feet to Adams Pond Road.

Work is scheduled to be completed by November.
