Londonderry police apply for equipment grant

LONDONDERRY — The Town Council unanimously approved of police Chief William Hart's applying for a Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.

"This is a federal program grant that honors an officer slain in the line of duty and is administered by Rockingham County," Hart said. "There are no strings attached."

Hart said the department applies for the grant every year and the grant this year would be for $11,000 with less than 5 percent of that for administrative fees for handling the paperwork.

The grant money would go toward motorcycle radar equipment, six new cruiser consoles and two LED light bars for the tops of cruisers.

Hart said the police patrol fleet will be changing out the Ford Crown Victorias that are no longer being manufactured.

"We are looking at the Ford Concept Police Interceptor," he said. "We're looking at prices and value, but have not made any commitments. The cap for switch-over is 2014."

The six consoles would have to be compatible with whatever car model is chosen, but the LED light bars could fit any model.
