Vintage car business gets variance for new space

DERRY — The owner of a vintage and antique car business hopes to double his space and business in the next year.

Zoning officials granted a variance to Stephen Condodemetraky, owner of dustyoldcars.com, allowing him to operate his business at a new site at 8 Tinkham Ave. in the town's industrial zone.

Condodemetraky also was granted a special exception for his business to also operate in a groundwater resource district.

"We buy and sell antique and vintage cars pre-1975," Condodemetraky said. "We do not display cars outside for sale, no balloons, no flags. All vehicles are exclusively located inside the building."

No car repairs will be done on site, he said, except for some minor work on his own cars. No changes will be made to the Tinkham Avenue site.

With the new location, Condodemetraky said he hopes to double his business, most of which is done over the Internet.

Right now, he said he has about 75 cars in his inventory, but hopes to grow his stock up to about 135 vehicles. He has sold cars to clients all over the world, including New Zealand, Russia and China.

"We've sold cars to 20 countries, almost every kind imaginable," Condometraky said.

He also hopes to grow his employee force up to about 20 workers this year.

"We are a retail auto dealership in the eyes of the state of New Hampshire, but we act much more like an online or Internet business," he said. "Ninety percent of our business does not come to us physically."

With the special exception also granted, Condodemetraky told officials he would protect the groundwater by installing special mats to collect any wet runoff created if vehicles are washed at the site.

Kevin Coyle is an abutter to the Tinkham Avenue property and said Condodemetraky's plan is a good one. Coyle owns a car lot on Folsom Road.

"I'm totally in favor of the application," Coyle said. "It's good to see a business coming into the community."
