DERRY — Twenty-one young women hope to win the top crown in this weekend's Miss New Hampshire's Outstanding Teen competition.
The eighth annual event is set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12, at the Stockbridge Theatre at Pinkerton Academy.
Contestants vie for scholarship money and the right to compete in the Miss America Outstanding Teen competition in August in Orlando, Fla.
Miss Outstanding Teen is the little sister contest for the Miss America Organization.
The competition encourages and rewards talent, communication skills, community service and academic achievement.
Preliminary competition begins for the teens, ages 13 to 17, on Feb. 11, with final competition set for Feb. 12.
Saturday's schedule begins at 2 p.m. and the evening competition is at 7 p.m.
Those preliminaries decide the top 10 contestants. On Sunday, the winner is crowned in the final competition beginning at 4 p.m.
Contestants are vying for more than $3,000 in scholarship awards.
Several local teens will take part in the competition including Shawna Gile, Derry; Meredith Eib, Kingston; Avery Goss, Pelham; Shannon Corcoran, Londonderry; and Jaycie Greenberg, Windham.
Miss New Hampshire's Outstanding Teen 2011, Lauren Percy, will crown her successor.
Tickets are available at the door at $30 for adults, $15 for students under 18 or seniors over 62. The one ticket allows entrance to both Saturday preliminaries and the finals on Sunday.
The Stockbridge box office opens at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 3:15 p.m.. on Sunday. For information, visit missnh.org.
