LONDONDERRY — All that glitters can be many things besides gold.
For one lucky couple in Londonderry, all that glitters is now a personally designed diamond ring.
Richter's Diamonds and Fine Jewelry in the Appletree Mall hosted its first diamond ring design contest recently, asking would-be jewelry designers to submit original sketches of what they thought the perfect ring might look like.
Paul Richter, goldsmith and jewelry designer, has won numerous awards for his own gemstone designs and custom-made jewelry creations.
It was time to see what designs others could come up with.
"We wanted to show what our capabilities are," Richter said.
There were eight entries in the contest, Richter said.
The designs were voted on by the jewelry store fans on a social media site.
The winning creation — submitted by Cindy Charest of Londonderry — was a shiny 3/4-carat stone accented with black diamonds.
All submitted designs became actual rings, Richter said.
The rings were on display at the store last week during a special reception held to honor the winner.
Charest said the idea for her winning design came as she and several friends sat around a kitchen table to bounce ideas off one another.
"We brainstormed," she said.
The winning ring will now go to her son, Cody, who is dating Shaun DeVoss.
"I'll have it for a while before I pop the question," Cody Charest said.
DeVoss said they have been dating about two years, but grew up in Londonderry together, both graduating from Londonderry High School.
It was those Londonderry fans who ended up putting the Charest ring design over the top in votes.
DeVoss said she loved the black diamonds in the ring. In fact, her first gemstone gift from her boyfriend was a set of black diamond earrings.
She said she waits for the next step — a marriage proposal.
"I'll be anxious," she said.
